Do you need a computer?

The answer is no, you do not need a computer to sell on the web.

There are many very lucrative businesses selling via exhibitions, to local visitors, an established niche market, with a local, national and even international clientele, doing so without the help of a computer.

Such businesses find themselves under increasing pressure to get a website, because of customer demand, its the customers, asking, have you got a website, from where I can buy instead of having to come to your exhibition or order from your catalogue?

You have got several options to solve the problem

1. Go out, buy a computer and get onto a crash course of web site creation or appoint some staff to create you a website, which you can run from your store. This would mean that the orders from the web are received within the store, packed and shipped.

2. Don't buy a computer, ask us to create you a commercial web store, load in your products and all you need is your store and the packing facility you have always had. Once the orders come in we notify you by fax and all you have to do is pack the orders and ship them.

Option two gives you the chance to slowly acclimatise yourself to the technological change and you may gradually take over the whole operation when you are ready but you do not have to stress and strain yourself into an environment, you have not gotten used to yet. This enables you to take advantage of new technology without having to live it yourself.

The financial side. Most stores already have a credit car clearance system and the ability to clear customer not present transactions, this would enable the acceptance of web orders, in which case all you need is a good quality cart, which enables the checking out over a secure section of the side to collect credit cards, which you clear manually. This will suffice for low demand, however should your sales hit the roof, you need something more automated to speed up the process. You may then negotiate with your bank a direct clearing process, where you do not have to manually run the card details through your little machine. This type of checking out however has a certain amount of risks because the security checks of the bank's clearing are not able to defer charging of a card, like you could do it with  who do have a steep set up charge, but not as much as the banks directly but Worldpay give you the option to defer card clearance, whereas you can reject a payment without being charged the processing fee. You are also able with them to blacklist, persons by name, email address, DNS address. You are then still charged a modest processing fee and have to wait around 5 weeks to get the funds you've earned but you can practically reduce charge backs to nil with this system. For very creative persons the WorldPay system enables you to set up a completely individualistic banking, checkout system.

Of course Paypal, and Nochex enable a free initial connection to their banking and charging only a processing fee per transaction, whereas you can download earned money within 7 days to a UK bank account. Incidentally with Nochex or Paypal, you do not carry a risk of charge back, as the banks in this case carry all the risk.

Many self-built stores like the BT one only allows WorldPay and another checkout option, but your versatility is exhausted within.

Whichever option you choose, you do not need a computer to start with to run a successful Internet business.
