The Employer
Governments in Britain today are aiming to shift the responsibility for society into the lap of the business. Wanting to take away control from traditional government control to businesses. Business controlled schools, hospitals, housing. So we shifted from royal control, to government control, to business control.
The Philosophy
The simple philosophy behind it is that if you want to make a profit, you have to control the situation enabling yourself to make as much profit as possible. From those profits you pay taxes, which are then distributed to the people you control. It is being said that whoever profits from the proceeds should also be responsible for the risks and damages caused in the course of producing this wealth.
The Law
However the laws now responsible for governing the country is meant to be independent of financial gain, in fact the legal system is supporting the economic concept but still tries to maintain the rights of the individual regardless of wealth.
The free market economy
Of course it makes sense, if you make the profit you carry responsibility for those you make the profit from and distribute the wealth to. So the race is on, who can make the most profit in the shortest time, or what can you produce to make as much profit as possible, of course in the process of it providing employment and taxes. The taxes are providing the services to the people working in the business creating the wealth.
Incidentally the people providing the labour to make the goods are also the recipients of the services financed by the profits and they are also the consumers of the goods. In the wider sense, because the vast majority of persons work for a relatively low wage whilst the minority direct and control the majority.
Whose profiting?
So every time a company produces goods, it has a manager, this is mostly the director, a large business has several directors and directors earn huge salaries, millions of pounds per year and they are getting personally seriously rich out of every company they direct.
Small Business
has very little impact as small businesses neither pay a lot of taxes nor are they in charge of wealth or human capital as they don't employ a lot of workers. Big business wants to keep small business down, as big business wants to stay big and not loose its grip on the economy by supporting the small business, but the small business depends on the big business for supplies.
What goods are being produced?
Since the abolishment of the 3-acre society, people stopped growing their own crops to eat and centralisation of services forced people to rely on each other to specialise in the production of certain goods, which they bought off each other. Slowly more and more people lost their direct relationship to the land. Less and less people owned their own land and depended on landlords to provide their abode and today the people who do own their house do own the house/flat only with little prospect of growing crops they can eat, but they work for an employer to provide them with the income needed to buy food and pay taxes.
The company they work for produces goods and services for their own profit and the goods they produce are produced for a mass market.
Responsibility
Slowly more and more businesses are starting to realise that they use up considerable amounts of resources with the production of the goods, made to make profit.
Cars, plastic products and heating use fossil fuels, Wood and paper products use up trees, Carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases, destroy the environment. It has been noted that cigarettes cause cancer, driving cars produces green house gases, promotes obesity, so does electronic entertainment because it provokes people to sit long periods of time in front of the TV. Radiation from mobile and cordless phones increase cancer, too much sugar increases diabetes, guns and weapons kill people. Suddenly those industrialists, that were once proud of their profits, suddenly realise there is only one planet and they have to live on it, there is nothing else, because really who wants to live on the moon, it is not as nice there, even if this was possible.
People being able to enjoy wealth need space to enjoy it and so they ventured off to purchase remote Islands, places in the sun.
The government
As the administrator or law, tax and governance, government traditionally holds all the strings. Governments can impose laws and are in charge of the law enforcing bodies controlling regions.
Its all about control
Humanity hasn't really overcome the basic instincts of wanting to be the leader of the pack. The desire to control others is the overruling factor in many political, economic, legal and military decisions. The factor of what's sensible often plays second fiddle, and today only come into play because the need for a good environment affects the leaders as much as it affects the poor. When in the past wars were fought between leaders with personal involvement today the prospect of sophisticated technology and weapons of mass destruction are the only reason international conflicts are being kept down, but to be fair, human conflicts often just end up in wars, just like animals fight each other in the yearly contests to show who is strongest, so humans use all their sophistication to achieve the same but with different methods. Who dies in the wars, its mostly the poor soldiers, the rich profiting from the wealth of society rarely get engaged in conflicts as that would defeat their aim to profit from their superiority.
So nothing has changed at all.
Conclusion
Business certainly cannot solve the problems of society, business in its very nature today is composed to provide an income for its owners, workers and as such - as it depends on the laws and governance - can only provide a work place and that is all it should do. Business is a profit based entity. Today the balance between business and government is firmly in the hands of business.
